Painting, prints and sculpture are John Hartley’s passions. His art reflects his interests of the human figure, toy collecting, social issues, and much more.
He opened Gallery 414 in 1995, an alternative art gallery showing local and regional artists in Fort Worth.
While he owns a gallery, he also has been displaying at Artspace111 since 2003.
The success Hartley has seen at Artspace111 has exceeded any of his expectations, he said.
“Last October I had a solo show at Artspace111 and I sold seven works. That is a really large number for one person to sell at a show,” Hartley said.
The life of an artist is always unpredictable. Hartley said last year he had incredible success, but that comes far and few between.
“A gallery can have shows up for a month and not sell anything, but the bills don’t stop coming in. It is really a tough business,” Hartley said.
Being an artist and a gallery owner, Hartley said he understand both sides of the business.
“Margery has done a great job keeping Artspace young, hip and up-to-date. I keep seeing the gallery get more and more success each year,” Hartley said.
Local artist Pat Gabriel began displaying at Artspace111 in 2009 when Gossett reached out to him.
Ever since his first time displaying at Artspace111 he has had success, Gabriel said.
The history of the talented artists that have displayed at Artspace111 is what Gabriel said he admires most about the gallery.
“The people they have shown here and continue to show are really talented. It is just always high level work that comes in and out of here,” Gabriel said.
Gossett is proud of what the gallery has become through the years. She hopes to continue and expand the success in the future.
